Jao Tsung-I Academy of Sinology puts strong emphasis on the development of intellectual talents. Following the model of Prof. Jao Tsung-i, our research students are pursuing research in a variety of fields related to traditional Chinese culture, using original research methods and comparative approaches. Under the guidance of, and in keeping with the spirit of Prof. Jao, the Academy is determined to cultivate and train the younger generation.

Students of our Xuan Tang Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Programmes and Master of Philosophy (MPhil) Programmes can make use of the Academy's remarkable collection of nearly 10,000 books, including a multilingual collection of translations of Chinese classics and literary works into over fifty languages from around the world. They can participate in the many international conferences and high-end academic seminars to communicate with international experts for innovative ideas and knowledge enhancement. Moreover, the Academy offers our research students opportunities of academic exchange to prominent Sinology-related departments globally, for first-hand eye-opening experience of different academic traditions, research areas and cultural atmosphere.

Similar to other research postgraduate programmes in HKBU, our Xuan Tang Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Programmes and Master of Philosophy (MPhil) Programmes are a combination of coursework and independent research leading to the PhD or the MPhil degree. Research postgraduate students are required to take coursework, complete an approved programme of supervised research, present the findings of their research in a thesis or dissertation, and pass the oral examination of the written thesis.
