Scholarship and Culture - Going Rural From Studio: Chinese Calligraphy and Seal Engraving by Daniel C K Lau (24/8/2015 – 30/9/2015)

To pay tribute to the spirit of Prof. Jao Tsung-i, the Hong Kong Baptist University Jao Tsung-I Academy of Sinology is organizing a series of exhibitions, seminars and workshops on Chinese calligraphy, painting and other activities related to both ‘Scholarship and Culture’. The first Exhibition was held in end August 2015, entitled Going Rural From Studio: Chinese Calligraphy and Seal Engraving by Daniel C K Lau. The Exhibition showcased around 50 calligraphy and seal engraving works produced in studio and outdoors by Dr Daniel Lau, Associate Professor of the Academy of Visual Arts, followed by a calligraphy master class and a workshop in Lishu.


An opening ceremony was held in late August, officiated by Ms Fione Lo, Museum Director of the Hong Kong Heritage Museum, Ms Maria Mok, Curator (Modern Art), Hong Kong Museum of Art, Dr Florian Knothe, Director, University Museum and Art Gallery, The University of Hong Kong and Dr Nicholas Williams, Associate Director, HKBU Jao Tsung-I Academy of Sinology.

Addressing at the ceremony, Dr Florian Knothe expressed his appreciation for Dr Lau’s persistent efforts in producing remarkable works and at the same time delivering teaching excellence. Dr Nicholas Williams said Dr Lau’s creations meaningfully combined traditional Chinese and Western elements. These have reminded him of the spirit of Professor Jao Tsung-i, who is renowned for his outstanding achievements in both academic research and artistic creation.
