With recent progress in the study of bamboo and silk manuscripts and new interdisciplinary insights, research on the interpretations of Chinese classics has attained remarkable achievements. Studies of pre-Qin classics have led to many new discoveries, in terms of both philological and philosophical interpretation.
This conference is organized around the research of Professor Dennis Cheng of the Hong Kong Institute of Education, who is exploring the meaning of key words in the pre-Qin classics, such as Zhong中 or Xing行, through both philosophic and philological approaches. Similarly, Professor Chen Zhi of Hong Kong Baptist University has been studying the development of form, meaning and pronunciation of particular words, as well as the Chinese idioms and binomes of Old Chinese.
To further strengthen and promote the research on the interpretation of pre-Qin classics, the Jao Tsung-I Academy of Sinology and the Hong Kong Institute of Education recently co-organised the International Conference on the Interpretation of Key Words in the Pre-Qin Classics at campus. The forum has invited many experts in ancient Chinese, including Prof. Ji XuSheng, Prof. Meng Pengsheng and Dr Masayuki Sato etc.
Their contributions not only lead to new discoveries on the interpretation of key words in the Pre-Qin classics, but also inspire students to think critically and independently on the importance on preserving Chinese cultural heritage. The papers will later be published by Jao Tsung-I Academy of Sinology.
