Second Series of “Scholarship and Culture” - Exhibition of Manuscripts, Calligraphy & Paintings by Modern and Contemporary Chinese Writers (2016/10/7-11/8)

The Jao Tsung-I Academy of Sinology held an “Exhibition of Manuscripts, Calligraphy and Paintings by Modern and Contemporary Chinese Writers” co-organised by Ming Pao Monthly, from October to early November.

The exhibition showcased more than 100 works of manuscripts, calligraphy and paintings from the collection of Mr Poon Yiu-ming, Chief Editor and General Manager of Ming Pao Monthly. They include works by 38 intellectuals such as eminent Sinologist Professor Jao Tsung-i, and famous modern writers Ba Jin, Qian Zhongshu, Shen Congwen, Jin Yong, Mo Yan, Jia Pingwa and Gao Xingjian. Among the exhibits were more than 70 letters related to published works as well as the daily life of the writers, which carried high historical value because some are not included even in the complete collections of the writers. There were also 54 calligraphy works and paintings in the form of hanging scrolls, and framed artwork.

Over 10 guided tours were arranged for teachers and students from local secondary schools during the one-month exhibition.

The opening ceremony, held in early October, was officiated by Ms Florence Hui, Under Secretary for Home Affairs of the HKSAR Government, Mr Zhu Ting, Deputy Director-General of the Publicity, Culture and Sports Department of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the HKSAR, Mr Poon Yiu-ming, Professor Roland Chin, President and Vice-Chancellor, and Professor Chen Zhi, Acting Dean of Arts and Director of the Jao Tsung-I Academy of Sinology.
