The Monumentalization of Chinese Writing and the Rise of the Art of Calligraphy

2025/1/6 | 16:00–17:30 | Conducted in English

Professor Lothar von Falkenhausen
Distinguished Professor of Chinese Archaeology and Art History
University of California, Los Angeles

During the final centuries of the pre-Imperial era, not only the physical appearance of writing, but also the range of its usage and its modes of display changed fundamentally. As observable through archaeological finds, this led to an increase in the variation in the physical size of written graphs after the middle of the first millennium BC. Linked to the thoroughgoing socio-economic transformation of that time, the monumentalization of writing was an important factor in the rise of calligraphy as an autonomous art form during the first millennium AD.
