Speaker Bio

Li Yan is a librarian at Fudan University and an expert in ancient book restoration. Li was a visiting scholar at the University of British Columbia, Canada, and holds a Master of Library Science from Fudan University. Her research areas include ancient texts, modern documentation, and the preservation of Buddhist palm-leaf manuscripts. Notable restoration projects include Ming and Qing editions of the Sutra on Maitreya's Advent, the Ming shengjing wen 明聖經文, Wujing wenfu 五經文府, and Si shu baihua jujie四書白話句解. Her publications include papers on document protection in the digitization process and internationalization of ancient book preservation.

Abstract

Presentation 1: Drawing from her experiences at the University of British Columbia Library, this presentation covers international efforts in ancient book protection and restoration. It highlights the importance, feasible strategies, and key considerations for such collaborations, aiming to guide domestic institutions and promote global conservation of Chinese cultural heritage.

Presentation 2: Using the Sutra on Maitreya's Advent as a case study, this presentation outlines the process of scientific restoration of folded ancient texts. It covers evaluation, scientific testing, planning, risk assessment, execution, and outcome analysis, providing a reference for those in the field of ancient book restoration.
