Dr Raphael Wong
Associate Curator, Hong Kong Palace Museum
The steppe and early imperial China are often regarded as distinct entities between which people shared a hostile relationship. Drawing on new and extensive archaeological materials from central China, Inner Asia and West Asia, this lecture questions this viewpoint by showing a strong influence from the steppe on, for example, the palaces and wheeled vehicles of the First Emperor of the Qin Dynasty (221–207 BC) and the regalia of the Western Han (206 BC–9 AD) kings. The lecture asks us to reflect on our understanding of early Chinese material cultures, and how the Chinese elite identified themselves in the regional context.
