During the Ming and Qing dynasties, Chinese architecture exhibited an unprecedented pursuit of spatial richness, interest, and novelty, particularly in the architectural design of Jiangnan gardens, leading to their prototypical transformation from landscape gardens to courtyard gardens. Focusing on the visual cultural context of the late Ming and mid-Qing, the lecture explores how narrative paintings, including novel illustrations and erotic albums, inspired spatial imagination and visual construction of architecture, and contributed to the development of garden design in reality, thereby enriching the “picturesque” tradition of Chinese gardens.
