“Inheriting the Legacy of Xuantang: Global Chinese High School Students’ Rhythmic Response and Poetry Competition Honoring Jao Tsung-i” (hereafter referred to as “the Competition”) is a non-profit event jointly organized by Beijing Normal - Hong Kong Baptist University (BNBU), the Jao Tsung-I Foundation of The University of Hong Kong, the Jao Tsung-I Academy of Sinology at Hong Kong Baptist University, and Jao Tsung-I Petite Ecole Fan Club at The University of Hong Kong. Co-organizers include the Simon Suen Foundation, the Chaoshan Chamber of Commerce, the Jao Tsung-I Academic and Art Academy at Sun Yat-sen University, and the Jao Link.

Adhering to the guiding principles of “promoting the scholarly spirit of Jao Tsung-i, preserving traditional culture; fostering university and high school collaboration to cultivate cultural talents, and innovating methods to globally disseminating Chinese culture”, the Competition adopts an international format to bridge humanities education between secondary and tertiary institutions. It aims to ignite students’ interest in classical poetry, enhance their cultural literacy and international perspectives, inform reforms in high school Chinese curricula, and nurture future ambassadors for Chinese culture.

The launching ceremony, held on 21 May 2025 at Huaxin Academy of BNBU, was graced by many distinguished guests, including Mr. Xi Enmin, Director of the Zhuhai Municipal Education Bureau; Mr. Zhong Guohuai, Member of the Party Leadership Group of the Zhuhai Culture, Radio, Television, Tourism and Sports Bureau and Director of the Zhuhai Tourism Development Centre; Mr. Hui Sung Piu, President of the Jao Tsung-I Petite Ecole Fan Club; Mr. Alberto Lei, Vice President of the Macao Chinese General Chamber of Commerce; Mr. Barry Lam, Vice President and Secretary-General of the Hong Kong China Chamber of Commerce; Mr. Zhang Xuliang, Deputy Director of the Zhuhai Hi-tech Zone Educational Research Centre; Mr. Zhang Liuan, Principal of Zhuhai No.1 High School; and Ms. Zhou Yuhuan, Vice Principal of Sun Yat-sen Memorial Secondary School. Also present were Professor Huang Yu, Associate Vice President of BNBU, and Executive Director of the Institute for Communication Studies of Chinese Culture (ICSCC); Professor Hon Tze-ki, Dean of Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, and Deputy Director of ICSCC; and Professor Guo Haipeng, Acting Dean of School of General Education, and Deputy Director of ICSCC.

I. Eligibility 

The Competition welcomes participation from all currently enrolled high school students worldwide who are proficient in the Chinese language. 

 

II. Format

The Competition will be conducted online through the official website: https://icscc.uic.edu.cn/poetry. 

A panel of experts convened by BNBU will select poems by Professor Jao Tsung-i. Participants will choose one or two of these poems and create original rhythmic response compositions following the prescribed rhyme patterns. Each participant may submit up to two original works. Submitted poems must reflect the scholarly values and literary style of Professor Jao. The expert Judging committee will evaluate submissions, and an award ceremony will be held at BNBU. 

 

III. Timeline

- May 21: Participant registration begins. 

- July 1 – September 20: Submission period. 

- Mid-July – Mid-August: Lectures 2 & 3 on Jao Tsung-i’ s poetry (onsite attendance and campus tours available for registered participants; contact the event advisory teachers for details). 

- September 21 – October 20: Judging period. 

- October 21 – 31: Results announcement and public posting. 

- November 18: Awards ceremony at BNBU. 

 

IV. Awards 

- First Prize (3 winners): RMB 20,000 each. 

- Second Prize (10 winners): RMB 10,000 each. 

- Third Prize (15 winners): RMB 5,000 each. 

- Excellence Award (20 winners): RMB 1,000 each. 

All awardees will receive certificates and prizes. Outstanding works will be published on the BNBU website.
