The study of epigraphy (jinshi studies) traces the origins of writing and captures the spirit of art. Seals and seal-impression albums are not only direct evidence of the seal carving tradition but also important sources for philology, calligraphy history, and the history of art collecting. The impressions left by inked seals are more than records of form and beauty. They represent the spirit of an era and the flow of scholarly thought.

Mr Lam Cheung Chung of Chung Jam Hin, a student of Tsang Wing-kwong, has continued the traditional study of epigraphy. After decades of dedicated collecting, his collection includes over 3,000 seals and more than 3,800 seal-impression albums. It is carefully gathered, systematically complete, and truly impressive. Mr Ling Xiang of Shiqi Caotang graduated from Fudan University's Department of Journalism and worked in the media before turning to the study and collection of literati seal carvings. His collection includes over 2,000 literati seals from more than 900 seal artists. He has also served as chief editor of two books: Yin Jian (Seal Mirror) and Wenren Yinniu (Literati Seal Knobs). The two collections have different focuses, but both reflect sharp connoisseurship and deep learning.

To celebrate the 70th anniversary of Hong Kong Baptist University, the Jao Tsung-I Academy of Sinology proudly presents the special exhibition "A Reunion of Seals and Seal-Impression Albums." For the first time, this exhibition brings together the treasures of Chung Jam Hin and Shiqi Caotang. Physical seals and rare seal-impression albums are displayed side by side, showing both the artistic beauty of seal carving and the scholarly value of collecting and documentation. Several sets of original albums and seals are reunited in the exhibition hall after being apart for a long time.

From May 4 to May 29, 2026, the Jao Tsung-I Academy of Sinology at Hong Kong Baptist University will host a special exhibition celebrating the beauty of seals and epigraphy. Join us for an inspiring opening ceremony and a captivating lecture series, where four renowned scholars will guide you through the fascinating realms of seal impression cataloguing, ancient seal research, character decipherment, and the exquisite craft of seal carving. Do not miss our Taster Day! This is a rare opportunity to try your hand at the elegant art of seal rubbing and to discover the profound charm of epigraphy up close.
